Self-Care Week, held on 12th-18th November this year, is an annual national awareness week that focuses on embedding support for self-care across communities, families and generations.

The healing power of sleep

Sleep is so vital to the basic functioning of your body and mind. From carrying out essential ‘repair work’ on your body and cells during those restful hours, helping to prevent diseases like cancer and even to lose weight, to improving your memory, alertness, and mental health, sleep really does have healing powers.

Long and restful sleep, therefore, should be the basis of your self-care routine. There are a few simple steps you can take for a better sleep;

-        Going to bed early to ensure you get 7-8 hours’ sleep

-        Avoid late-night electronics and smartphones before bedtime or while you’re in bed

-        Developing a sleep routine; have a regular bedtime, do the same thing before bedtime every day, for example, read a book for 15 minutes before bedtime

-        Avoid brain stimulating substances containing caffeine and alcohol within a few hours of bedtime

-        Preserve the sanctity of your bed. Do not study, work or socialise in your bedroom/from your bed

However, if you’re still having trouble sleeping, it could be your mattress that’s to blame.
